Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Island Association http://www.bosia.org 842-0774 Founded by Kim and Ela Esterberg in 1986, Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Island Association began as a way to offer Bainbridge Islanders a different view of Nicaragua besides the one portrayed in the news of the Contra Wars. They raised money from 100 island families and Kim went to Nicaragua, and found Ometepe. Kim's trip began a tapestry of richly varied connections between two very different and distant islands, a tapestry that shows clearly how much the islanders have in common. In 1990 the Sister Islands Association started to import fair-traded, organic, shade-grown coffee from Ometepe. Called Café Oro de Ometepe, it is specially grown, specially bought, and specially roasted. Many of the farmers have become friends, including Cooperativa Carlos Díaz Cajina. CDC is a producer cooperative of 29 families that owns a farm on the slopes of Maderas, one of the two volcanos that forms Ometepe.
