Greetings Friends!

On Wednesday, March 27, the Bainbridge Island City Council will consider Resolution 2002-27 - Earth Day, which was presented to the Community Relations Committee on March 20.

This resolution (the draft is attached) was originally intended to obtain Council support for community-wide Earth Day events coordinated by volunteers from local businesses, organizations and the City's Adopt-A-Road program. These events have been planned to celebrate our connection with the Earth, honor the abundance of environmental initiatives and projects in progress on Bainbridge, learn about leading-edge Earth-friendly practices, and provide various opportunities for citizens to roll up their sleeves and help. (Events include guest speakers, community conversations, exhibits, T&C's Three R Fair - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, non-motorized parade, Island-wide litter cleanup, etc.)

While drafting the resolution, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a statement that takes us beyond Earth Day and suggests the need to expose more citizens to the great work that is already being done in our community and to further explore community and environmental sustainability. This resolution could have been written many different ways and would certainly benefit from more community involvement and technical expertise - there is much more that needs to be said and done. We offer this simply as a springboard for more dialogue and another opportunity for Council to go on record with their commitment to the environment.

We invite you to support this resolution and add your voices to "public comment" at the Council meeting Wednesday, March 27, 7:00 at City Hall; or contact Council members directly prior to the meeting.
