Health Care

Independent physicians, dentists,
optometrists, and other healthcare professionals, both traditional and non-traditional, are available on the island.  There is one HMO health care facility that provides comprehensive care.  Local hospitals are in Bremerton (approximately 45 minutes away from the island) and in Seattle.  Trained paramedic personnel are available for emergencies or more urgent care.  Four pharmacies service the population.

Police & Fire Protection
Bainbridge Island has its own city police department and county fire district to help ensure the safety of island residents.

Professionals
There is a large array of professionals who practice on the island.  These include, but are not limited to, attorneys, accountants, and consultants.

Real Estate
There are several real estate services provided, both independent agents and realty brokerage firms.  Apartments and home rentals are also available.  The home prices begin at $190,000 and may approach $2,000,000.  The residential rental costs range from an average of $800 to $2,000 monthly.  There is some subsidized housing available.  Costs are determined by commodities and location.

Religious Organizations
There are approximately 21 religious organizations on the island, with most denominations represented.

Schools
Public--There are 3 elementary school (K-5), 1 middle school (6-8), and 1 high school and 1 alternative high school (9-12) on the island.

Private--There are 15 private preschools & kindergartens, 4 elementary, and 1 middle school on Bainbridge Island.  There are no private high schools.

Utilities
Water is provided by private or commercial wells.  There are no natural gas capabilities on the island; however, propane tanks are available as a natural gas alternative.  Electricity is the most prevalent source of power
Septic systems are most prevalent in residential areas and sewer systems are available in certain districts.  Curbside garbage disposal and recycling is provided throughout the island
