Bainbridge Island from it's early beginnings has had a mix of cultures. Native Americans were here first before this rock was called Bainbridge Island. During the days of timber harvesting many European and Asian people found their way here. In more recent history farming for strawberries emerged as an industry and attracted Japanese and Filipino farmers. Those who lived here of Japanese ancestry and were born in America were known as Nikkei. They all were and are Bainbridge Islanders and most were citizens of the United States of America.
